Attention all writers! Include. Your. Writing. Samples. In. Your. Application!

Here's a tip to all those writers out there, from someone who hires a lot of writers and editors: Include. Your. Writing. Samples. In. Your. Application!

We're hiring for an Editor right now at Narrative Bent (DM me if you're US based and interested in applying, by the way) and I'm combing through over 200 applications right now.

We specifically ask that applicants include examples of their writing work or a link to their portfolio in our job description.

And yet...

Almost 90% of them don't do it.

Here's the thing, folks:

If I'm hiring a writer / editor, I don't care what your resume looks like. I care how you write. I skim through nearly everything in your meticulous resume to find a URL or a document link that can show me what you sound like on the page.

If you've got those links, you're about 10X more likely to be considered for the role. I'll read through your hook, maybe a few paragraphs to get an idea of the style, and decide in under 5 minutes whether its worth interviewing you.

If you don't include samples of your work — I might spend a minute trying to find some on your LinkedIn if your resume is really impressive but 9/10 times I'll just move on to the next resume.

You don't have to have a ton of years of experience.
You don't have to have a background in marketing or communications.
You don't have to be a journalist.

You just need to show me you can write.
